Did you know that there are more than 2,500 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world? The UK is home to over 30 of those species, which amounts to a large number of irritating mosquito bites.
Not only do mosquito bites cause skin irritation and inflammation, they can also spread diseases such as the West Nile virus, malaria, dengue and encephalitis to humans, as well as heartworms to the canine members of your family.
The key to keeping your family and pets protected from the West Nile and other mosquito-borne viruses is to use proactive and preventative measures.
When heading outdoors during mosquito season, use insect repellent that has EPA-registered ingredients, and follow the package directions and warnings closely. Mosquitoes are attracted to darker colours, so wearing light colours may decrease your chances of being bitten. Trousers, long-sleeved shirts and socks reduce the amount of exposed skin, thereby cutting your risk of getting mosquito bites. In addition, try to avoid spending time outside in the evening, when mosquitoes are most active.
Reduce or eliminate mosquito breeding sites. These include any areas of standing water such as gutters that do not drain properly, flat roofs, birdbaths, tire swings, pet-watering containers and holes in tree stumps. Be sure to keep all swimming pools properly treated and circulating, and regularly change the water in birdbaths and your pets' water bowls.
In addition to standing water, shaded areas are also popular mosquito breeding sites. Mow your lawn at least once a week, and keep your hedges and bushes trimmed to reduce shade. Make sure all door and window screens are "bug tight" and fill any leaks or cracks in the exterior of your home. Replace the outdoor lights (bulbs) of your home with yellow ones, which, although not repellant, are less likely to attract mosquitoes than ordinary lights.
Eliminate already-present mosquito larvae. Adding minnows and goldfish, which eat mosquito larvae, to ornamental pools is a natural way of eliminating mosquitoes. Also, treating your pool with chemicals or natural bacteria can facilitate mosquito elimination in your backyard.
