The local towns of Cumbria and Lancashire are to receive a boost when it comes to fighting pests on farms.
Local firm Assured Environmental are predicting a very busy winter with the on set of the cold weather an increase of the rat population is expected.
Assured Environmental Services, whose Cumbrian base is Askham, near Penrith are predicting that large numbers of rats will be heading in toward the farms over the winter months.
This is because there are very little natural foods in the hedgerows this year, due to the very wet spring. In addition, the maize wholecrop in the area is only just being cut because the fields have been too wet to get on to.
Most of the pest control in Cumbria has been in the Carlisle and borders area down to Penrith and out towards Brough and Kirby Stephen.
Many of Assured Environmental's existing agricultural customers have experienced quick influxes of rats onto the farm already this autumn, which they call us out to, so that we can treat immediately rather than waiting for their visit to come round.
Rat trapping and mole trapping are on the increase as these pests also seem too benefitted from the wet summer – trapping usually starts for these in December.
