Creating A Buzz

A pest control company has received buzzing praise for a new ecological initiative which encourages residents to take up beekeeping.

The Suffolk Pest Control Company plans to relocate swarms of unwanted bees to newly constructed hives, which will be made available to sell to budding bee-keepers.

The Pakenham-based business has commissioned community interest company The Centre, in Bury St Edmunds, to produce the hives. The organisation, on Station Hill, allows unemployed people with additional needs to develop skills in areas such as woodwork, IT, arts and crafts. They have already made two hives with the possibility of more to follow.

Martin Buckle, director of The Suffolk Pest Control Company, said: "At this time of year we get a lot of calls for honey bees, which are great for the environment, but some people do need them removing. This way the bees get saved and someone has the opportunity to keep bees and make their own honey."

The initiative also includes a year's membership of the Suffolk Beekeeper's Association, which has backed the move.

Ian McQueen, county secretary of the association, said: "It's a good idea. The more people we can get interested in bees and pollinating insects the better."
