There are a number of pest control companies who offer blanket spraying of your property for a fixed annual fee. They claim that they can kill all crawling insects by implementing this method.
Besides spraying pesticides without a target pest, there are several reasons why I would never recommend such a service. First, any insect, spider or other arthropod can occasionally wander into your home. Dispose of the occasional invader however you like. However, occasionally you may see a few insects of the same species and it may be important to know what they are.
Recently I inspected a house that was treated for ants. They also had furniture beetles (Anobium punctatum) that the exterminator didn't identify. The presence of these beetles and similar species are an indication that rotten wood is present. The beetles won't infest a home if there is just a little rotten wood, so there could be a leak in the wall or ceiling that needs your attention.
The presence of anobiid beetles on the windowsill of a house with loft space would indicate a problem in the wooden support beams. Bostrichid beetles could indicate a leak in the ceiling as they require a 12 percent moisture content in wood to infest it. These beetles are usually found in homes with latillas and vigas.
There are a number of species of beetles and moths referred to as stored product pests. If you have little beetles or moths flying around your kitchen area, you probably have some food that is infested. Knowing the identity of the particular stored product pest will direct you to the correct source of food so you can eliminate the problem.
If you have moths flying around your clothing, then you probably have a problem with clothes moths. Most commercial pheromone traps work very well against the webbing clothes moth but do not work at all for the casemaking clothes moth. A qualified pest control operator should be able to distinguish the two moths at a glance, as well as all the other insects mentioned.
If you have large flies in the house, they may be bluebottles, and if so, would indicate a dead animal in the wall or ceiling void. Bird mites would tell you that there are pigeons on the roof, and rodent mites would indicate a rodent population. In both these cases, the host animal - pigeon or rodent - would have died and the mites are looking for alternative food sources.
Never hire a pest control company that kills all crawling insects; hire one that can identify all crawling and flying insects and will make recommendations and treat accordingly.
